Rounding out the weekend of March 8-10, 2013, Oz The Great and Powerful proved to be quite powerful leaving the box office battlefield victorious. Box Office Aftermath is an ongoing column dedicated to recap the weekend’s total ticket sales. Each week, combatants enter the cinematic war zone, bloodthirsty for your cash. But there can only be one true winner. In Box Office Aftermath, we will take a look at the numbers, how previous contenders fared, and provide a brief analysis of the results.
It was no contest. Oz The Great and Powerful steamrolled into theaters this past weekend to blow the competition out of the water. Jack the Giant Slayer, in its second weekend fell 63%, bringing it’s total domestic take to $43.6 million. At a $200 million budget, Warner Bros. will have to bite the bullet on that one. But over in the land of Oz, Team Disney / Buena Vista earned a respectable $79.1 million in their first weekend. Looks like Sam Raimi has still got it.
On the other side of the coin. The other release that happened this past wekeend, Dead Man Down earned a miserable $5.34 million. Surprisingly, my screening of the film had a lot of butts in the seats, including a family who thought it best to bring their rambunctious screaming child. (They got kicked out.) But I think the cast has horrible star power. The movie wasn’t good anyways, but there was no draw to bring people in out of curiosity. I’m surprised it got fourth.
Contained in the rest of the top five was Identity Thief at number three, and Snitch at number five. The Last Exorcism Part II and 21 and Over both dropped considerably in their second weekend along with Escape from Planet Earth and A Good Day to Die Hard, both in their fourth weekend.
Dark Skies in its third weekend and Warm Bodies in its sixth both lost over 800 screens. Theaters probably want to get horror out for bigger releases coming up this weekend like The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and The Call.
Two big Oscar winners winners are still hanging on in the top 15, Life of Pi and Silver Linings Playbook.
Oz will have quite the competition this coming weekend. Halle Berry and Steve Carrell are both big names people will want to see. But Oz hits all quadrants of demographics, which will most likely win again.
